Hot Dog with Sauerkraut and Onion Jam
We love a good hot dog and enjoy making it special. This time, we’re sharing our favorite winter hot dog, topped with a delicious homemade onion jam that has a slightly sweet flavor. We also add cooked sauerkraut for an extra layer of texture. The sausages are grilled to perfection, and if you have the time, you can serve everything in soft homemade hot dog buns. If not, your favorite store-bought buns will work just fine too.

Essential ingredients

This recipe is divided into four parts. First, we make the onion jam, cook the sauerkraut, grill the sausages, and then make the hot dog. Find more information about the ingredients in the following paragraph or the whole recipe below.

Onion jam - homemade jam is fantastic for various dishes, including burgers, sandwiches, and this hot dog. We need simple ingredients like onion, honey, balsamic vinegar, pepper, and thyme to make it. It's creamy and sweet, absolutely divine.

Sauerkraut - adds a bit of character to the hot dog. It's good for the body and this recipe.

Sausages - we used local hot dog sausages Z'Dežele. If you can't find them in your area, use frankfurter sausages.

Hot dog—For the sandwich, we need sweet honey mustard (which is popular in Austria and Germany) and soft hot dog buns, which you can buy in your favorite store or make at home

Storing

We don't recommend storing the prepared hot dog. However, you can quickly cook the sauerkraut ahead and make the onion jam ahead.

Store the onion jam in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 7 days. Reheat the jam or serve it cold.
